A package containing explosive materials was intercepted in Dubai on its way from Yemen to a Chicago Jewish institution, and authorities in London were investigating a suspicious package in England as part of a terror probe that spanned three continents, officials said Friday.

Quinn portrayed Brady as the bearer of “nonsensical” plans that won’t lead the state forward, while Brady accused Quinn of standing by as ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich ran Illinois into the ground. Quinn restated his support for an income tax increase to help ease the state's massive money woes during the hour-long debate broadcast by WTTW-Ch. 11. The governor said Brady has failed to offer details about how he'd bring the state out of the red other than implementing deep cuts.

“Sen. Brady is irresponsible and he's reckless and he's wrong, and that's why people are very suspicious of his plans,” Quinn said. “They don't make sense, they're nonsensical.”

Brady countered that Quinn has had two years to fix the state's budget, but the pile of bills grows higher.

“He's not willing to face up to the tough decisions that a governor must make,” Brady said of Quinn. “Illinois' spending is out of control. Gov. Quinn has been unable to rein in state spending.”

Quinn maintains he has cut $3 billion in spending, but Brady noted that overall spending has gone up since Quinn took over for the impeached Blagojevich.

“It doesn't matter how many times you say it, it doesn't make it true,” Brady said of Quinn's budget claims.

In Illinois, irresponsible government has saddled the state with a $13 billion budget deficit and pension and other retirement obligations for government employees that add up to $130 billion by the reckoning of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago. A study by the American Legislative Exchange Council ranks Illinois 47th among all states in its economic outlook.

Gov. Quinn has been at the helm for almost two years and done nothing to inspire confidence that he can tame the forces driving the state toward insolvency, especially the public employee unions that have sunk their fangs into the taxpayers' jugular to support gold-plated pensions and benefits most of us can only dream of. He cuts a deal guaranteeing no layoffs to a big government workers union while proposing a tax increase.

Republican Bill Brady promises to cut the state out of its crisis, a course derided by his opponents and some experts as impossible. Still, no tax increase merits a minute's consideration until the state's economic infrastructure is reformed: government spending controlled and reduced, the tax and regulatory structure reworked to encourage business investment, and the pay, benefits and pensions of public employees brought in line with the private sector.

The Illinois Policy Institute has a plan that doesn't include raising taxes.

“The facts are still coming in, but the discovery of suspicious packages in the United Kingdom and Dubai reported to originate in Yemen and bound for the United States is extremely disturbing and only reinforces the continued serious nature of the threats that are being posed both directly and indirectly to the United States.

“In the past few days, we have also had two serious incidents in Hawaii and Virginia of home-grown terrorists who may have been inspired from Yemen by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, just like the tragic attack on American soldiers at Fort Hood. Al-Qaeda in Yemen has used the internet to release vicious propaganda that is attempting to radicalize Americans and incite the murder of Americans by Americans. And now, explosive packages reportedly have been sent from Yemen to synagogues in the United States, another clear sign of religious intolerance and hatred by the jihadists.

“We can’t minimize the nature of these threats or wish them away. The serious nature of this week’s incidents only underscores how critical it is to actively confront the threat at all of its sources. The National Organization for Women (NOW) on Thursday condemned the tabloid website Gawker for publishing an anonymous account: NOW issued a statement late Thursday stating that “sexist, misogynist attacks against women have no place in the electoral process, regardless of a particular candidate’s political ideology.”

“NOW repudiates Gawker’s decision to run this piece. It operates as public sexual harassment. And like all sexual harassment, it targets not only O’Donnell, but all women contemplating stepping into the public sphere,” said NOW president Terry O’Neill.

Sen. Hendon (Gov. Quinn?) in Hot Water over DCEO Grants

Chicago Daily Observer from the Chicago Tribune story:

Subpoenas from U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald’s office arrived in August at five state agencies seeking copies of contracts and other financial records related to nearly 50 not-for-profit agencies and more than a dozen individuals.
An accompanying letter says the subpoenas are part of “an official criminal investigation,” although it does not say who or what may have been the subject of the investigation.

A number of the agencies said they received grants with the assistance of Chicago mayoral candidate and Democratic state Sen. Rickey Hendon, who is also assistant Senate majority leader. Several of the individuals have ties to Hendon, including his sister and her daughter, whose film and stage production organization received more than $1 million from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity in 2007-08, some of which went to make a movie.

Hendon himself is not named in the subpoenas. Tribune:

Hendon said he did not know why the records were subpoenaed. He declined to comment when asked whether law enforcement authorities had contacted or questioned him.

The Rev. Lewis Flowers of the Westside Ministers Coalition, which received $140,000 in state funding from 2006-08 for after-school and other programs run by the coalition or a sister agency, said if the government is investigating grant expenditures, he finds no fault in Hendon.

"He always tells people to make sure that you've got your paperwork in order, because he's not going to jail for nobody," Flowers said.

Chicago Democrat State Sen. Rickey "Hollywood" Hendon was most recently in the news in the company of Dem Governor Quinn making particularly inflammatory remarks aimed at Quinn's GOP challenger Bill Brady. Dem Governor Pat Quinn stood by while Illinois state Sen. Rickey Hollywood Hendon made the most sickening slurs against Republican candidate for governor Bill Brady, then shook Hendon's hand. Knowingly despicable. These remarks:

Several local politicians attended the rally, led by U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, at the New Tabernacle of Faith Baptist Church, which was filled with union workers when Hendon launched into his attack on Republican governor nominee Bill Brady, a state senator from Bloomington.
"Let me tell you a couple things. I've served with Bill Brady. I've never served with such an idiotic, racist, sexist, homophobic person in my life," Hendon told the crowd. "If you think that the minimum wage needs to be $3 an hour, vote for Bill Brady. If you think that women have no rights whatsoever except to have his children, vote for Bill Brady. If you think gay and lesbian people need to be locked up and shot in the head, vote for Bill Brady."
The crowd clapped loudly as Hendon wound up his sermon-style introduction, some shouting "No sir!" as Hendon ticked off his criticism of Brady.

Is there a connection?

Some of the Chicago media tried to sanitize Hendon's remarks. How much more does the Chicago/Illinois media know about these subpoenas, given they were issued back in August. Hmm?

The subpoenas went to DCEO and the Departments of Children and Family Services, Human Services, Public Health, and the State Board of Education.

I understand from an anonymous credible source that Quinn may receive a subpoena too, if he hasn't already. Isn't this something the voters should know before the election?

Some may say they don't want to politicize the legal process, but this seems way too convenient for the Dems, considering we had the same kind of thing going on with Blago when he was reelected--he was under NINE separate federal investigations. Now he has been impeached. And convicted in the courts on one count. So far.

Well, there's a gubernatorial debate tonight on WTTW Channel 11. Will this question come up?

But Broadway Bank did loan money to Nadhmi Auchi: “On Feb. 14, 2006, newly obtained records show, the bank made a $22.75 million loan to a company called Riverside District Development LLC, whose owners, it turns out, included Rezko… Rezko's lawyers said his main partner in Riverside was General Mediterranean Holding, a Luxembourg company controlled by Iraq-born billionaire Nadhmi Auchi.” (Chicago Sun-Times, 8/2/10)

In 1996, Belgium's Ambassador to Luxembourg claimed that the Banque Continentale du Luxembourg, which was jointly controlled by Auchi and BNP Paribas until 1994, had handled the personal bank accounts of Saddam Hussein. In 1993, Pierfrancesco Battaglia, an Italian banker, swore in a statement that Auchi had bribed members of the Hussein government in order to secure the rights to build an oil pipeline from Iraq to Saudi Arabia. Auchi is barred from entering the United States and is deemed an undesirable alien by the State Department. In 2003, Nadhmi Auchi was convicted in France on counts of fraud and bribery in connection to the Elf Aquitane scandal. Pethokoukis: More Risk from this president

Holy crap. Well, those of us who were newly graduated in the teeth of the Carter misery index (unemployment plus inflation in double digits) have been worrying about this--but a deliberate strategy?:

Obama could try to emulate Reagan by proposing a massive tax cut, but that seems unlikely given the administration’s belief that America is under-taxed right now.

But there is another way, although it is amazingly risky. A Bloomberg story, using a simulation run by Macroeconomic Advisers predicts a 10 percent decline in the dollar in the first six months of next year would do the following:

1. Gross domestic product would rise 1.1 percentage points more than the St. Louis-based firm’s baseline forecast for next year, to 4.8 percent.

2. In 2012, growth of 5.7 percent would exceed the baseline forecast by 1.3 percentage points.

3. Unemployment would fall to 7 percent by the end of 2012, 1.4 points lower than the firm’s baseline forecast.
There you go, Morning in America II, thanks to the weak dollar — unless of course the dollar starts plunging out of control, boosting inflation and creating a panic.
