I may tweet this week

I am fried and snow is coming. So I imagine there will be a shovel-ready project at hand.

An act of God, not of The One.

So I may or may not take a break from blogging. But I will probably tweet from time to time. I put a little bird on my site. On the left. At some point I will probably run into total technological incapability, but I have faith the techies keep designing these things to be user-intuitive.

Fig4 Drytooling....very good!

Further to my previous post on dry tooling with Fig Fours, I decided to head to Awesome Walls to have a play on their dedicated Fig Four/Schmoolz routes. Had a good hour and a half at the wall, and have to say I really enjoyed it! The tools are great to play around at the wall with and really get you pumped quick, but more importantly there's a real focus on technique and thinking moves over. The only problem with the Fig Fours is a lack of bottom horn, without leashes this makes them hard to use without gripping much higher up on the axe. Outside of that these were great, myself, my brother and my best mate had a great time, and enjoyed pushing each other with new routes, overhangs, corners and tricky moves, and I will definitely be heading out again! But we all agree the Fig Fours are definitely a great piece of kit, will be including some Fig Four training in my training from now on and looking to push my grade a bit when I head to Scotland in Feb! So there's something to aim for! Other than that I'm more motivated for getting out winter climbing a couple more times before the end of the season!

Atko was very fluid with his climbing and hopefully we can really build on our team work for Alpamayo 2012! Also hoping to head to Awesome Walls Stockport to test the Fig Four's out on top rope and leading to see how they function going vertically instead of just traversing! Also going to aim to climb in B2 boots in the future rather than rock boots, and may also consider wearing a helmet (I cracked myself on the head twice and it hurts!!). Also watch out the axes slipping off and hitting you in the face!

The video below shows Simon playing around on a Schmoolz route given the grade V3-4. Enjoy! Download available here: www.electronicmountainleader.co.uk/DSCF5121.AVI

The president was too polite to mention it during his State of the Union speech on Tuesday, but here's a quick summary of the problem: The U.S. is broke. The hole is too big to plug with cost cutting or economic growth alone. Rich people have money. No one else does. Rich people have enough clout to block higher taxes on themselves, and they will.

2000 GMT: A very touching story is developing in Cairo. As the NDP's headquarters burn, there were fears that the Egyptian National Museum, which houses some of the world's most ancient artifacts from the old Egyptian civilization and a beautiful collection of ancient whales fossils, would catch on fire too. There were earlier reports - albeit unconfirmed - that some people were looting the museum.

Now Al Jazeera is reporting that young protesters have formed a human chain around the museum to protect it against looting. It seems for now that this treasure trove of human ingenuity and the natural world's wonders is in no immediate danger.

Kirk, Schock Intro Bill to Block Gitmo North Funds

Here's the statement. And it's a good thing:)
Kirk and Schock Introduce Legislation to Block Transfer of Gitmo Detainees to United States

Measure intended to plan for orderly trials and incarceration at $400 million facility already paid for by the U.S. taxpayer

CHICAGO—Determined to plan for the orderly prosecution and incarceration of terrorist detainees currently held at Guantanamo Bay, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria) unveiled legislation today that would block the expenditure of federal funds to move the suspected terrorists into the United States. The legislation also blocks the use of federal dollars for any future transfer of any new foreign detainees onto U.S. soil.

“After learning of Administration plans to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees to Illinois, Congressman Schock, myself and the other members of the Illinois congressional delegation joined to protect Illinois from this action,” Senator Kirk said.

“Just last month after the Administration attempted to insert a last-minute provision into the Defense Authorization bill giving the Administration power to transfer terrorists to the heartland, we realized the fight to protect Illinois from hosting terrorists is not over.”

While Congressman Schock, Senator Kirk and other Illinois lawmakers successfully protected Illinois from the proposed transfer, Administration officials remain committed to bringing detainees into America.

“This isn’t the first time Senator Kirk and I have teamed up to ensure terrorist detainees are not transferred to Illinois or the United States,” Congressman Schock said. “The big issue for me is the total lack of transparency from the White House on their intentions regarding potential transfers of terrorists located in Guantanamo, or abroad, to the U.S. There seems to be a complete disregard for sharing this information with the American public or the safety of the communities they put at risk by housing these terrorists in our back yard.

“The United States has a multi millions dollar, state-of-the art facility, including court rooms, in Guantanamo Bay, and that should be where enemy combatants captured on the battlefield are held, tried and brought to justice.”

Senator Kirk and Congressman Schock said the Administration’s long-term goal raises the possibility that Thomson Prison in Illinois or another facility on the mainland could be viewed as a potential site to house the terrorist detainees. Plans for the State of Illinois to sell Thomson to the Federal Bureau of Prisons hit a snag last December when federal officials unexpectedly failed to submit a bid for the $219 million facility. But federal officials reportedly remain interested in buying the prison to house non-Gitmo U.S. federal prisoners.

Closing Guantanamo raises questions about whether the detainees ultimately would face trial for their alleged crimes in a civilian court or in front of a military tribunal. Congressman Schock and Senator Kirk both favor providing stability to the trial and detention of terrorists by holding military tribunals and incarceration at Gitmo.

“Since the federal government spent over $400 million to build courtrooms and a terrorist detention facility at the 45-square-mile Guantanamo Bay facility, we should use it and not waste money on a new facility during this time of fiscal austerity,” Senator Kirk said.

Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Congress passed the Authorization to Use Military Force, which granted the President the authority to “use all necessary and appropriate force against those…(who) planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks” against the United States. Subsequently, non-uniformed combatants captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere were transferred to Guantanamo.

While approximately 800 combatants were transferred to Guantanamo for prosecution, a substantial majority of detainees were re-transferred or released. Unfortunately, many of those released resumed jihad against the United States or her allies. Defense Department officials classified the remaining 174 detainees into three categories: 1) detainees in preventative detention to prevent them from rejoining enemy forces; 2) detainees expected to face criminal charges; and 3) detainees cleared for release.

Both Senator Kirk and Congressman Schock favor justice for the detainees through military tribunals.

“We should follow the legal precedents of Presidents Lincoln and Roosevelt by bringing the detainees before military tribunals for final justice,” Senator Kirk said. “For the greatest mass murderer in U.S. history, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, I would hope the prosecution in his military tribunal would seek the death penalty.”

It relied on data provided by the states. WTF

The state has reported that its unfunded liability was $75.7 billion at the close of fiscal 2010, which ended June 30. That compares with $62.4 billion in the 2009 data used by Moody's.

Moody's acknowledged that pension liability levels also may be understated in its report because it relied on data provided by the states. The accounting rules governing states allow for more flexibility and variation than do the rules governing corporate disclosures.

"Moody's is still quite far away from facing the true unfunded liability," said Joshua Rauh, an associate professor of finance at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

When state pension funds project how much they will owe retirees, or their liability, they convert the sum into today's dollars, figuring those dollars will be invested and provide annualized returns in line with the fund's stated investment goals, most of which range between 7 and 8 percent.

Rauh believes the state should peg its plan, instead, to the lower returns provided by less risky investments, such as those provided by Treasury bonds. "Illinois' unfunded liability is more like $200 billion," he said.
But not to worry, the Dems and Governor Quinnocchio are on the case. WTF hits the fan in Illinois.

Progress for School Choice in Chicago

Bowing to pressure from parents, some new charter schools were approved, but there's need for much more:
Chicago began approving charters in 1997, and over the years the number of parents choosing charter schools has grown. Andrew Broy, president of the Illinois Network of Charter Schools, says 1 in 10 CPS students today attends a charter. Advocates say about 12,000 students are on charter waiting lists.

"We cannot turn back the clock," said Juan Rangel, CEO of United Neighborhood Organization, or UNO, a network of nine schools that was approved Wednesday to open three new elementary campuses and expand an existing middle school in Gage Park to high school.

At the meeting, charter parents testified at length about how the schools have helped their children improve grades, offered individual attention to special needs students and inspired students who were not always academically inclined.

Carrie Waller, of Lincoln Square, said she chose a charter after her son was unable to score high enough to be admitted into a top-tier selective-enrollment high school. Her son has done well at a Chicago International Charter School campus on the North Side.

"Charters are little jewels in the CPS school system," she said. "Let's continue to celebrate their success and continue to make them an option."
Many kids are still Waiting for Superman, with a slap from the Hollywood elites, despite the proven need:
A review of the statistics shows that despite spending on public education growing steadily over the past century, America's primary and secondary education achievements are mediocre. According to White House data, state-level spending on primary and secondary education totaled $235 billion in 2009/2010, while the latest PISA scores place the U.S. among average achievers. This international education survey, which assesses the knowledge and problem-solving abilities of 15-year-olds, shows that the U.S. is lagging far behind several Asian and European countries, all of which, besides Luxembourg, spend less on average per student on education.

The good news is that there are proven ways to reform education which can ease budget pressures while simultaneously raising student achievement.

Many private and charter schools outperform public schools in terms of both costs and performance.
It's national school choice week. We've got a long way to go, but there's some hope. Get involved.

Trying to provide her two daughters with a better education. How on earth did trying to provide your children with a better education become a crime in the United States? Because the political party that currently occupies the White House is completely dependent on the power of education unions, and these unions see all efforts to shift power away from them, and to parents like Williams-Bolar, as a threat to their very existence. The case of Williams-Bolar is a perfect opportunity for the left to stop and reconsider their war on school choice.

Before January 15, Williams-Bolar had no criminal record.

This show of literary bravado was enough for the Times. Its reporters refused to see then and refuse to see now how naked their emperor stands as the Obama yarn unravels before them.

As a case in point, in his anticipation of Tuesday's State of the Union address, Matt Bai of the Times casually repeated a fiction now little-believed beyond America's newsrooms -- namely that "Mr. Obama is probably the most talented writer to occupy the office in the television age." Bai then wonders why Obama "hasn't tried to use that talent the way Kennedy capitalized on his personal charm."

More. Is our president Barack Obama smarter than a 5th grader? Ben Stein:
There were two glimpses of the old Obama -- when he slammed "subsidies" for oil companies, which of course do not get any subsidies, but have business deductions the way every other business does, he sounded every bit like the envious skinny Harvard man he once was. When he railed against tax breaks that he considered identical to government spending, that was outright socialism. That concept implies that all the income in the nation belongs to the state, and that if we let working people keep any of it, that is the same as a government expenditure. The opposite is true. The income belongs to the people, and they allow government to have some of it. But, of course, the servant has become the master now.

ObamaCare Kills Illinois Jobs. Abbott Labs

Tribune:
Pharmaceutical companies, long considered some of the most prolific moneymakers in American business, are coming under increased profit pressure from all sides, including generic drug companies, the new health care reform and government regulators, which have stepped up scrutiny.

On Wednesday, Abbott Laboratories acknowledged the "challenging" environment and said it would cut 1,900 jobs, largely from its U.S. operation, with 1,000 of them in Illinois.
Threatening stuff here:
Drug and medical-product companies have been in the cross hairs of the FDA, and for legitimate reasons, say consumer groups and lawmakers.
More, CBS2Chicago:
He said the move would affect the taxes, housing and local businesses.
“Without the jobs, obviously, people pull back,” Stolman said. “Again, it hurts when things happen like this.”
Gee, and why would Illinois be a prime place to scale back? A job-killing death spiral, let us count the ways:
The plaintiffs' trial bar seems to have an iron grip on the courts in Illinois, with Cook County being rated as the third worst judicial hellhole in the country by the American Tort Reform Association (ATRA) because of the abundance of frivolous and abusive lawsuits there.[16] That includes ludicrous lawsuits on behalf of spectators at the zoo who were splashed by dolphins or a $425,000 judgment against siren makers in favor of firefighters who claimed that fire engine sirens were "too loud."[17]
Have Abbott's products suddenly become more life-threatening and less life-saving? I doubt it. Coupled with the Dem trial lawyers' affinity for suing anything that moves and ObamaCare it's open season on medical innovation and the next generation of near-miracle drugs.
A pro-life health-care policy involves accelerating the pace of medical innovation, by reducing the regulatory and financial burdens we place on the pharmaceutical and medical-device industries. That means strengthening the influence of market forces, as opposed to subsidies and price controls, on the development of drugs and devices. It also means streamlining the FDA so that innovative new therapies can reach the market more quickly and cheaply. It means minimizing, and if possible eliminating, the ability of federal bureaucrats to deny life-extending care.
Your risks are going up under ObamaCare. Count on it.

The new GOP House has repealed this destructive law. Our work is cut out for us as voters to stand with those legislators who roll back ObamaCare and brush back onerous regulations before more jobs and lives are destroyed.

More. Tribune editorials here and here. And bankruptcy should be an option for this state. Jeb Bush and Newt Gingrich, LA Times Op-ed:
During the 2008 financial crisis, the federal government reacted in a frantic, ad hoc fashion, tapping taxpayers for bailouts galore, running roughshod over the rights of bondholders and catching the American people unaware and unprepared. In contrast, we still have time to prepare for the looming crisis threatening to engulf California, Illinois, New York and other state governments.

The new Congress has the opportunity to prepare a fair, orderly, predictable and lawful approach to help struggling state governments address their financial challenges without resorting to wasteful bailouts. This approach begins with a new chapter in the federal Bankruptcy Code that provides for voluntary bankruptcy by states, a proven option already available to all cities and towns across America.
I think it is the only way to save us.

As Illinois in a Dem stranglehold goes, so goes the country. Unless we act to stop this unfolding catastrophe. On so many fronts.

Well, Jan, I am more scared than you. There's a dark vision all right but it's yours and Barack Obama's. We have Dem Sen. Dick Durbin touting Son of Stimulus. Major FAIL. No way. My pre-election rant on Jan Schakowsky:
She voted for ObamaCare which cuts half a trillion out of Medicare to subsidize a new entitlement that kills choice, won't work and will bankrupt this country--forcing up insurance rates and causing employers to drop coverage they can't afford any more.

She has attacked small business with draconian regulations and taxes, driving them to the verge of bankruptcy and destroying jobs.

She has stonewalled: No answers on her continued corrupt practice of rewarding cronies at our expense.

She has allied herself with the duplicitous J Street which actively undermines Israel, and as a member of the House Intelligence Committee is criminally blind to the security threats we face at home.

And she is ignorant and contemptuous of the laws of this country and of her constituents, the voters.

It's time for Jan to go.
Sadly, her constituents are stuck with her. Because her real constituency are public employee unions which are bankrupting Illinois. But there's hope for the country after this last election. Paul Ryan will do fine in rebuttal to our glib President Barack Obama.
